Bariatric Surgery - What you need to know...

Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity. The term bariatrics was coined in the mid 1960s from the Greek root baro (“weight” as in barometer) and suffix –iatrics (“a branch of medicine” like pediatrics). Besides the pharmacotherapy, this branch of medicine deals with obesity surgeries, know as Bariatric Surgery/Surgeries.

Obesity is a rising medical problem of pandemic proportions in the United States. There are many detrimental effects on a person’s health that are caused by obesity such as heart disease, many types of cancer, diabetes, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic musculoskeletal problems, and the list goes on. There is also a clear effect of obesity on mortality, but it is not clear thus far with the slightly- to-moderately overweight.
