There isn’t any standardized or required training for surgeons
to be able to legally perform liposuction procedures. Any doctor can perform
such procedures and in response to increasing demand, many doctors are
choosing to do exactly that. Therefore:
-
In the United States, one should choose a surgeon who is a member
of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons or at the very least a member
of a national association for cosmetic surgeons.
-
One should look for a plastic surgeon who is experienced in the area
of cosmetic surgery that he or she is interested in receiving. Also
the surgeon should be experienced in the specific procedure that he
or she is recommending to the patient for their surgery.
-
Liposuction faculty should be licensed and/or accredited by a nationally
recognized surgery accreditation body. The facility should have the
ability to handle any complications that might occur as a result of
the liposuction procedure.
-
The surgeon performing the procedure should have privileges in
one or more respectable area hospitals. This is a backup in case
the facility isn’t equipped to handle an emergency situation.
-
The anesthesiologist should be equally qualified (or more so) as
the performing surgeon.
-
All support staff should have experience with the procedure that
is to be performed.
-
Candidates should set up consultations with multiple cosmetic surgeons
before choosing one to perform the surgery.
-
All patients’ questions should be answered directly and eagerly.
Never go back to a surgeon who dances around questions or talks in
riddles when answering questions.
-
The patient should feel personally comfortable with his or her
surgeon as well as being confident in the surgeon’s professional
abilities.
