In all methods of liposuction, there are certain things that should apply to all procedures during the pre-surgical through post-surgical stages:

  1. Candidate and surgeon will agree ahead of time on exactly which areas will be treated and both will discuss outcome expectations.

  2. Consent form should be signed on the day of the procedure.

  3. Antibiotics should be given to the patient an hour before surgery or immediately following surgery during the initial recovery period.

  4. Targeted areas are marked on the body while patient is in a standing position.

  5. In some cases, photographs will be taken of the areas that are being treated, so the patient and physician have a before and after record.

  6. In the operating room, a sterilizing solution such as Betadine should be applied to the appropriate areas.

  7. Local anesthetic will be injected into the area that is being treated and the patient might be given a sedative if the surgeon feels it is necessary.

  8. Incisions are small-approximately ½ to 1/3 of an inch in length.

  9. Patient will most likely have an IV fluid line since it is common to lose a lot of fluids during these types of procedures. It is essential that the body’s fluid balance be maintained both during and after the surgery.

  10. Monitoring devices will keep track of patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen levels.

  11. Patient will only feel a scraping or rasping sensation from the cannula movements during the surgical process.

  12. Usually the patient can get up, walk around, and go home shortly after most surgeries, except in cases where general anesthesia was administered. However, all surgery recipients will need someone else to drive them home after they are released from the surgeon’s care.
