Since this procedure is considered an aesthetic one (for appearance's sake, not health), it is not generally covered by insurance. Tummy tuck surgery is a major surgical procedure that tightens a person's abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and firms up the muscles in the abdominal wall. Unfortunately, unless prescribed to treat a hernia or for treatment of a medical condition such as post-gastric bypass surgery with excessive hanging skin or after significant weight loss, tummy tucks generally aren't covered by health insurance.

The cost of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) includes three fees: the anesthesia fee, the facility fee, and the surgeon's fee. The surgeon's fee is the most difficult to predict without first knowing the extent of the procedure and the qualifications of the plastic surgeon.

The national average surgeon fee as reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is $4,650, but will range between $6,000 and $10,000 when anesthesia and facility fees are included.

Costs vary among facilities. Tummy tucks can be performed in an office surgical suite, but in many cases they are performed in a hospital. The procedure often requires many hours in surgery. Some patients stay overnight in the hospital. The procedures with overnight stays are typically the most expensive.

As with most cosmetic surgery, many tummy tuck surgeons offer payment plans. If the cost of the procedure is too large for you as a lump sum, ask your surgeon about monthly payments.
